A 10-year-old Vestas turbine near Århus, Denmark, spins out of control during a storm on Feb. 22, 2008. It effectively explodes when one of the blades hits the tower. According to a Feb. 25 report by Kent Kroyer in Ingeniøren, "large, sharp pieces of fiberglas from the blade rained down over the field east of the turbine, as far as 500 meters from the base of the turbine". Another collapse occurred in Sidinge [Vig?], Denmark, 2 days later: "one of the heavy blades flew 100 meters through the air and crashed to the ground with a boom". Kroyer continues: "It has not even been a month since a similar Vestas turbine at Nås in Gotland, Sweden, lost a blade in the same way as in Sidinge. In that case the blade flew 40 meters and hammered down in a field. A neighbor described the bang as 'a sonic boom or a car accident'. Before the New Year, a Vestas turbine in Northern England collapsed, and a month earlier a Vestas turbine collapsed in Scotland." Note that this is a 10-year-old 600-kW model and much smaller than today's behemoths.Welcome to Mars Hill
When I envisioned this project in its final form, I knew I wanted it to look like the tree was changing colors over the course of one day. So I first found my subject, a sprawling oak tree that stands in the shadow of the magnificent Duke Chapel. When it was time to film, I set up my camera in roughly the same spot, at about the same time each day. For this particular time lapse, I positioned my camera at the center of Abele Quad. In that spot, my tree takes center stage with the chapel in the background. Then the waiting game began for this beautiful oak to turn vibrant orange. In the beginning, the process was kind of like watching paint dry. It was slow and not very eventful. But by week three, a glimmer of hope, as a tiny patch of orange peeked through the green canopy. Signs of fall at last!
I went to some other panels, too, about storytelling and camera equipment and filmmaking and YouTube in general and got to meet with a a bunch of Internet-famous people, so if you want to hear more dirt or just chat about YouTube (or Disneyland), drop me a note or give me a call.
The patient is first placed in a supine position. The posterior lateral meniscus root tear is located, debrided, and then passed with three high-strength sutures in a luggage-tag fashion. Following patient-specific planning, the tibial bone 3-dimensional (3D) model and plate are prepared on the table. The patient-specific cutting guide is placed at the 3D model and marked with the pen. The distance from the cutting guide and the joint line is measured. It is also marked for the optimal plate position after an osteotomy. Next, the superficial medial collateral ligament (MCL) of the right knee is identified and sharply elevated from anterior to posterior. The previous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tibial tunnel is identified, debrided, and reamed with an acorn reamer. The cutting guide was placed and fit to the medial border of the right tibia. A fine osteotomy drill bits gently pushed through the guiding tunnels. The bone resection is completed with the osteotome in accordance with the indicated depth on the cutting guide. The osteotomy is then closed by knee extension. A tibial pre-drill guide is next applied and used to measure the distance between the ACL tibial tunnel and the guide. The holes are drilled as planned. The patient-specific plate is then placed and secured with screws. Fluoroscopy is used to ensure that the osteotomy is completed, and that the hardware was in a good position. All screws are inserted into the plate. The previous tibial ACL tunnel is filled with a combination of bone from the osteotomy site and allograft. Next, a transtibial tunnel is placed using a cannulated drill. The meniscus root sutures are secured with a knotless anchor on the tibia. Finally, the MCL was closed in a figure-of-eight fashion. The pes anserine was also repaired. The skin was closed in a layer fashion. The postoperative film showed a decrease posterior tibial slope to 4.
To capture that feel, Charles Cecil went to Dublin, Ireland, where the animator Don Bluth ran the studio behind such films as The Land Before Time, All Dogs Go to Heaven, and Thumbelina. There he met one Eoghan Cahill, who had been working with Bluth for years, and got a hasty education on what separates the amateurs from the professionals in the field. Cecil: 2ff7e9595c
